At the end of this note is some stuff Dorene Cornwell sent me last year about several lists and how to subscribe. DISARM-L is an international "Disarmament Discussion List" which was pretty wild during the Gulf Massacre (oops, "War"), with the pro-war and anti-war types getting verbally violent at times. It's a safe way for people of very different views to debate, and certainly provides insight into the various military mindsets that we are up against. I sent summarized reports from ACTIV-L especially on anti-war protests as well as the real effects of our "smart bombs" regularly to it as part of my contribution. Postings are sent to "DISARM-L@ALBNYVM1.BITNET". The list moderator is Don Parsons: *----------------------------------------------------------------------- * |Donald F. Now mostly messages are flying about the earthquake, especially trying to get information about specific localities for people with relatives there and information about how to help. So far I've just read the postings, hoping my general Spanish will improve by osmosis. (As a scientific translator, my vocabulary isn't too useful in real life.) Postings are sent to "CENTAM-L@UBVM.BITNET". By the way, you wondered why I thought the term "progressive" is a bit arrogant. As you say, this depends on your experiences with the term. I've run into too many people who label themselves "progressive" and seem to think they're SO much better than all those "nonprogressive" types. Well, there are a lot of obnoxious people carrying all sorts of labels, so this really isn't too good a reason for my dislike of the term. But the term itself also is a problem for me: What the heck IS progress, anyway? In some ways the automobile was progress, in other ways it was a big mistake. Change isn't necessarily for the better. I generally just don't like labels, since they seem to close out options and build walls between people. HOWEVER, I subscribe to The Progressive, read it, and quote from it extensively anyway....I'm learning tolerance. Which reminds me of the time back over ten years ago when I was browsing through the college library and started reading In These Times. I remember being impressed by the articles, thinking, "Hey, these people make sense..." and then I looked on the masthead and saw (HORRORS!) that they called themselves SOCIALISTS! I quickly put down the contaminated newspaper. It was an unnerving experience. Well, I got over my typical American prejudice against "socialists" (and have even been CALLED one on occasion), and even don't blink now when dealing with "communists" and "Marxists". So I'm sure that with time and patience I will get used to the term "progressive", if that's what everybody wants. Peace, Cathy Flick _______________________________________________________ (general information about various lists, from Dorene Cornwell "cornwell@iubacs.bitnet", December 1990) DISARM-L about disarmament; including some live ones from the Pentagon USSR-L news about the USSR , including people in the SU and other peaceniks BALT-L news about the Baltic republics: not everyone there is exactly a raving progressive, but I like to be there. ACTIV-L Rich's listHe'll put you on CENTAM-L about Central America CHILE-L LOTS of material in Enlgish and Spanish about Chile. FUN, but a LOT of material. To get onto these lists, send a mail message to LISTSERV@INDYCMS containing ONLY the lines SUBscribe listname your name for each list you want to subscribe to. The lists aren't all based at INDYCMS, but the Indy Listserver will send the subscription requests on to the right listservs. DO SET BROADCAST=nouser3 beforehand or make sure your login.com included the lines above first so you don't have to look at the network messages, or just send itoff right before you plan to log off. ______________________________________________
