I just wanted to let you know that some mail delivery agents have troubles with addresses of the form you give ("cdp!@labrea..."), due to the inherant ambiguity of "mixed" addresses (containing both bangs and at-signs). Most mailers (including my own) process the address component following the "@" first, but I know that someone at Bell Labs (ihlpf.att.com) had problems sending to a cdp address, since her mailer wanted to send the whole thing to cdp, which was unknown to it, and let it figure out how to send to "@labrea.stanford.edu" -- clearly the wrong interpretation!! I now tell people to use things like "labrea.stanford.edu!cdp!cerisea" - which seems to be universally understood. BTW, I wanted to consult with you and Harel regarding the subject of mailing lists. As you may know, I operate a bidirectional gateway between a mailing list and the IGC system, with the blessing of Howard Frederick, Bill Leland (EcoNet director), et. al. However, there are a number of issues involved, and I'd like to discuss some long-term planning for these kinds of activities, and to see if you'd be interested in some form of collaboration. I am in the process of attempting to obtain funding for the work I'm doing, and would be willing to share an account of my experience with you in return for some help in thinking things through. I sent you a somewhat rambling message about a month ago in which I asked about your archiver, and mentioned a few things about your re- lations with the PeaceNet people. Do you recall receiving that note? As I recall, Harel is in the Boston area from time to time. If he plans on being here over the holidays, please give me a call at 617-776-0121. Perhaps we could get together to discuss things. Thanks to you both for the wonderful job you're doing! Regards, Gary -- Gary S.
