Turkey/Cyprus) Reply-To: harelb@cabot (Harel Barzilai) Distribution: world Keywords: Forward from ACTIV-L (see bottom) ------------------------------------------------------------------ From a flyer given out at the Jan. 26 March on Washington: ==================== NO DOUBLE STANDARDS! ==================== In 1974, Turkey, a NATO member larger than the size of Iraq, invaded Cyprus, an island smaller than Kuwait. This was done with the help of U.S. tax dollars. As a result of this invasion, 200,000 Greek Cypriots became refugees. 40% of the island is still under Turkish domination. 1619 people, including 8 Americans remain missing. The atrocities committed by Iraqi soldiers in Kuwait were preceeded by Turkish soldiers in Cyprus. Raping, pillaging, the destruction of antiquities took place in 1974 as well as in 1990. The invasion of Cyprus by Turkey however, did not threaten the foreign oil supply to the United States. To this day, in spite of numerous United Nations Resolutions, TURKEY REMAINS AN OCCUPIER OF CYPRUS. The United States [Administration] has done nothing to enforce the resolutions, which number even more than those which the U.S. is currently trying to enforce in the Gulf. In fact, in an ironic twist of fate, the U.S. [current Administration, again --HB] supplies Turkey with $500 million per year in military aid, making Turkey the third largest recipient of U.S. military aid. Why does the U.S. [Administration] condemn one invasion, while it condones, supports and finances another invasion with your tax dollars? If it is a matter of "PRINCIPLE" that has prompted the US. to liberate Kuwati, should this "principle" not apply to all nations? EVEN THOSE WITHOUT OIL? WHAT ABOUT CYPRUS? ------------------------------------------------------------------ ################################################################## For more information about ACTIV-L or PeaceNet's brochure, send inquiries to harel@dartmouth.edu ################################################################### # Harel Barzilai for Activists Mailing List (AML) # ################################################################### To join AML, just send the message "SUB ACTIV-L " to the address: LISTSERV@UMCVMB.BITNET; you should then receive a message confirming that your name has been added to the list.
