From rjh1@midway.uchicago.edu Thu May 9 00:36:10 1991 Date: Fri, 22 Feb 91 10:20:36 CST From: robert j hinde To: prog-pubs@fuggles.acc.Virginia.EDU Subject: info on progressive e-mail yellow pages I found this in my mailbox and thought some of you might be interested in signing your publications up. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: The Progressive Email Yellow Pages Project PROGRESSIVE & ANTI-WAR E-MAIL YELLOW PAGES STARTING *** Please Pass This Notice On Everywhere *** The Success of This Project Depends on as Wide a Response as Possible We are assembling a national and international E-mail address directory for progressive organizations, AND for student and community organizations mobilizing against the war. The rapid progression of current world events makes the formation of strong links between progressive groups nationally and internationally imperative. Electronic mail provides the means for groups to organize and coordinate their actions across nations and between continents for a fraction of the cost of phone calls, with near instantaneous communication. Since the war in the Persian Gulf broke out, electronic mail has played a crucial role in circumventing the media censor- ship surrounding the war. However, its full role as an interactive medium for organizing has not yet been tapped. One of the problems has been the lack of a comprehensive directory of addresses for progressive groups, particularly between nets. The main purpose of this directory is to fill that void, to provide a tool for establishing contacts between groups in the movement, and to facilitate the rapid distribution of news and ideas. But the success of this project depends upon users like you. Please sign on to our project and distribute this list to as many friends and associates as you can, particularly on other nets and internationally. The format of the guide will be 1) a quick cookbook style set of instructions on using email and communicating with other networks, 2) an alphabetical listing, and 3) a subject listing. We are asking for only three subject listings per entry to keep down the level of cross-referencing, and if you can make do with less, we would appreciate it. We will be compiling the database on a Unix-based system, and will also try to format it in such a way that it can be manipulated (as a data base) on either a mainframe, or a PC using commercially available software. We will try to have a preliminary copy of the guide ready in 1-2 weeks (depending on the response), so send in your addresses quickly. Note: this ser- vice is for informational purposes only. We ask that the data base be for contact people represent- ing organizations and affinity groups (not private individuals) to prevent the listing from getting unmanageably large and expensive to distribute. If you do not represent an organization but would like to participate in this directory, volunteer to serve as a con- tact person for an group in your community. We also STRONGLY suggest that you contact your local organizations and encourage them either to recruit someone who knows email and has access to a computer account or to have one of their members commit to learning email and getting an account. As the data base grows, we will regularly mail the updated address list to members. We take addresses from ALL networks that can communicate with others. If you would like to participate in this list, please send us your address IN THE FOLLOWING FORM (USING PRECISELY THIS FORM SAVES US A LOT OF TIME AND RESOURCES): Email Address: _____________________________________ Net: ______________ Email Addr. #2: _____________________________________ Net #2: ______________ Contact Name: _____________________________________ Organization: _____________________________________ University Name: _____________________________________ Contact Address: _____________________________________ _____________________________________ City: ________________________ State or Province: ________________________ Zip or Postal Code: ____________ Country: ________________________ Contact Phone: ____________ Fax #: ____________ BBS Number: ____________ *Organizing Focus1: _____________________________________ *Organizing Focus2: _____________________________________ *Organizing Focus3: _____________________________________ * i.e. student movement, labor, community organizing, networking, media watch, etc...3 subjects only please If you have nothing to put in an entry, leave a space there. This will facili- tate writing the instructions section. Be creative in how short you can make clear instructions for novices. We would be especially interested in instructions on mailing to nets in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, etc..(particularly on ways to solve conversion problems for machines working in other languages). Needless to say, the costs of a project of this nature can mount quickly, so we are asking that organizations joining the list to please send a donation to the following address (make checks payable to Edward Bade, Project Manager). All of the work on this is strictly volunteer and non-profit, and we need financial support to put out a consistent and useful product. If you cannot afford to make a donation at the present time please sign up anyway. However, an immense amount of work has already gone into this project and any resources will help considerably. Please mail contributions to: UCSC Alumni Alliance Against the War "c/o Data Base Project" Suite #125 Post Office Box 1880 Santa Cruz, CA 95061 USA Thank you for your time and cooperation. Sincerely, Ned Bade Project Manager NOTE: E-mail has the potential to be an important tool for networking, providing quick, inexpensive communication between communities and organizations. However due to the nature of the system, ANY MESSAGES SENT BY E-MAIL MUST BE CONSIDERED PUBLIC. Please note: this project has nothing to do with the University of California.
