From harelb Sun May 12 01:07:30 1991 Date: Tue, 7 May 91 15:30:48 -0400 From: harelb (Harel Barzilai) To: Activ-L@Umcvmb.Bitnet, harelb Subject: IMPORTANT NOTE re: RENAME VOTE As you may know, there is currently in progress a vote for re-naming (really, naming) "misc.activism.general" Under this approval-voting system, people send in a list of names (from the list or "write-ins") which they find acceptable, leaving out names they do not find acceptable. I made some comments/suggestion previously about naming, but I have to modify those comments to due to new information. It turns out that PeaceNet only takes the first 14 characters of a newsgroup's names. Hence their terse "pn.*" for example. I had previously expressed support for "misc.progressive.*" but that would not be workable. I suggest now "misc.peace.*" (e.g. "misc.peace.gen") ; another suggestion, which someone emailed to me is "ecopax" rather than "activism"/"progressive"/"peace." I'm sorry for Yet Another note about voting (at least in this case it's within the same vote, not all over again) but I simply did not know about these PeaceNet conventions (and yes, they wouldn't be unable to carry the groups but simply re-name it themselves, to misc.prog.gen rather than misc.progressive.general; e.g. PeaceNet carried talk.pol.general [sic], but I thought it would be best if we pick our own name to be carreied on PeaceNet and that changes wouldn't need to be made there later) My other cautions still hold, especially not isolating ourselves in an "org" which could be kicked of as an entire hierarchy by sysadmins who don't believe in "ecopax" personally. I also urge people to take this vote seriously and *participate* -- besides the posts on the Net urging we be "banished" into our own hierarchy like "org" where we could be marginalized (in terms of distribution, in particular), just recently there was another public urging to stick-it-to-us in this name, urging "[calling it] left.* ... as a sign of our disgust" Thanks Harel As a reminder, ================================================================== VOTES ARE TO BE SENT TO: (1) peter@taronga.hackercorp.com (Peter da Silva) and (2) mathrich@umcvmb.bitnet (Rich Winkel) and must be received at both addresses to be valid. Both addresses appear in the Reply-To: line. At the conclusion of the voting period, any possible discrepancies will result in attempted resolution by contacting the voter(s) in question rather than immediate discounting of the vote. All votes must be received by 23:59 UTC (GMT), 12 May 1991. ==================================================================
