Que Pasa? 2)We need to get going on m.p.p., no? I'm still not in the position to lead all this(*), but I did talk to John L., and he agreed to be put down as a "maybe" in th elist of co-moderators. Recall, the idea was to split up the work. Also, if people moderate the areas they are interested in and look at anyway, the extra amount of time necessary to moderate this topic (be the recipient of all relevant PeaceNet group, ACTIV-L member, etc stuff on the subject, scan, organize, and post it, etc, what you're doign right now). The partial list is then: Rich Winkel General administrative Harel Barzilai Resource Files; linking local/campus groups/PSNs John Lamperti Central America (maybe; part of? Nica? ..) How's about we draft together (since you're busy, why don't I try to write it up and email it to you in th enext couple of days for you to look at? Ok?) something to post to ACTIV-L; we paste the relevant parts of the m.p.p proposal and the above list; we ask for people to volunteer to moderate other area. Some ideas: Yigal Arens Middle East ?? Hiram Clawson with Andy Lang Christic and Covert Action stuff ?? Environment ?? Domestic; M.I.C.; health care/homelessness/etc ... (*)I spent some time yesterday and today drafting a letter to send to (or hand to) the senior faculty here to see if they can make some special arrangement for me to support myself teaching here (and keep th Chicago 'package deal') despite not being enrolled in the Dartmouth PhD program, which they usually reserve lectureships for, being a small place where that's how it's "always been done." I'm finding my job as a tutor for the Intensive Academic Support program very satisfying, but financially it's kind of tight. I have enough savings, but I won't feel comfortable until I'm back on some sort of regular (and somewhat higher) monthly stipend deal again. 3)I sense an atmosphere of feel-good activism, again back to the theme of effectiveness; no real effort to educate the public about the Constitution and the War Powers Act *thoroughly*, not just to mention it, but to make it one of the key things you say, not just "a lot of people would die." And ditto about other matters, e.g. education about the M.I.C., about the 300 billion military budget when one-third would be more than adequate, 100 billion on "defending" west Europe, the Soviet Congress of the People's Deputies' repeated rosolution(s) saying they are ready to meet any time any place for the U.S. to join them in a verifiable test-ban; the international attempts to have a CTB, US and UK only ones against... all of this needs to be brought into the picture because it is part of the picture, without which intelligent public education and consciousness/policy transformation will not likely occur... U.S. being only industrialized country save for SA without national health care... Too little of these, and too much, I hear, about "body bags," "another Vietnam," etc., all good, but not on the mark, not focused enough, not something that will have a long-term public-educational effect (and thus an effect on foreign (and domestic) policy) after Saddam, like Noriega, passes into Former-Official-Villain-hood, and the next time comes. And unless we do go at it with those long-term public-education strategies, there *will* be a next time, because Bush and pals are going to try damn hard to find a next time. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I've indulged in this because I have something uplifting to close with (also because I think it's important). Despite the kudos for the activist mailing list, if the activist on the street knows more about the environmental consequences of a war in the gulf (sort of like talking about nuclear winter, as if we shouldn't be able to convince people given the direct consequences of a nuclear war), than about stopping the $42 million that's now going to be sent (just read in today's Boston Globe) to butcher and dismember more Salvadorans, I can't help but feel we(activists in general)'re doing something wrong. Yeah, the news about ES did color my mood somewhat, as when you feel like walking in frong of a car. Anyway, here's what I got in my box a few days ago... it shows we're doing something right. And I'm relaly impressed with (almost concerned for your about) the amount of work you put into ACTIV-L... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Date: 5 Jan 91 16:16:00 CDT From: "Mary Lynne Dittmar" Subject: P.A.C.H. To: "harelb" Harel: Hi. My name is Mary Lynne Dittmar, I'm a faculty member at University of Alabama, Huntsville. There is a busy, thriving activist community here, probably in response to the fact that the Redstone Arsenal and NASA (Marshall Space Flight Center) are also here. ACTIV-L has been tremendously helpful; it has spurred on a local group of academics (we're currently putting together a series of public forum/lecture/discussion meetings on the Perisan Gulf), provided networking with other activists across the country, and generally provided emotional and spiritual support -- we are not, after all, alone; there is a focus and direction to what we do. I just wanted to let you know this -- especially after having read your posting of 4 January about effectiveness. Also, after reading it, I wanted to ask for the P.A.C.H. document which you indicated was available by e-mail.
