You're an emacs user. Me too, and also a Peacenet subscriber. I thought you might be able to answer something that's been on my emacs wishlist for some time. Is there an emacs package that makes in convenient to sit on your local (probably unix) machine running emacs and make an emacs window to log into Peacenet, peruse the groups there, and download desired articles? It would be nice, for example, to be able to hit some key to download an article into another emacs buffer (perhaps taking the name of the buffer and associated local file from the group name and article number while allowing the user the chance to type in something more apropos), then another keystroke saves the file and puts you back to browsing Peacenet. If I knew how to program elisp I might write such a beast myself, but I don't, so I'm hoping someone else has. I posted a query like this some time ago on comp.emacs, but got no response. Thanks for your efforts to get misc.activism.general (or something like it) going on UseNet. Good luck with the vote. You sent me the information, and I have read through it. I am very interested in the idea. I would like to know if there is any way I can help with it. I am a busy person, so I could not put a lot of time in it. But I think the idea is so important that I would like to help. You asked about what techical skills I have and what connections I have with organizations. I have some skills with computers. I was a computer programmer and analyst with IBM for five years. Now I have about two more years to go to get a PhD in computer science at Boston University. The groups I have connections with because I have done volunteer work for them are: 1. Peace Development Fund 2. National Peace Institute Foundation 3. Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility I can tell you more about those groups if you are interested. Reply-To: aj912@cleveland.Freenet.Edu Dear Harel, Re: My Services .. I should like to volunteer my services to Amnesty, PeaceNet and the ACTIV-L. What I have in mind is that I could publish my daily "News Listings", my weekly "Wingate Letters" and perform other duties as you, and the administration would see fit. I would do this at no cost, . For the record, my system is made up of a Tandy 1000 <8088 processor>, with dual floppy drives <5 1/4 - 360K>. I have a 1200 baud internal modem card. But the apartment building that I live in has a digi-pad on the front of the building for people to gain entrance to the building. From this, I then realize such a level of line noise that I am currently only able to transmit at 300 baud. However, while being on disability, I am researching alternatives that I could use in order to resolve this problem. From a source outside of the state of Ohio I have found that I might be able to purchase a filter for my phone line that would resolve this problem. Further, while my system is by no means like the big guns that so many people have, it is run by a system of batch files that fully automates the system. Further, my largest batch file that runs the system is automatically spooled out to a 64K ramdrive that is spooled out automatically when I leave certain batch routines where the larger programs that I use are loaded. While in ram, the large system batch, called "Job17.bat" runs so fast, while being some 1900 command lines long it only takes the system some 5 seconds to run the length of the file. The system is what is known as a disk management system, this meaning that all data files are archived on various disks . When the archives are full, with the exeception of my News Databases, they are then transferred to storage disks that I keep in an on-site vault. To date, I have in excess of 75,000 pages composed on disk in various reports, news stories, position papers, journalistic articles, three books, two plays, monthly newsletters, and other writings. I should be only too happy to lend my talents, and my effort to PeaceNet, sharing my articles, and other writings, in addition to helping out with reports and other record-keeping, and/or administrative, work. ################################################################## ################################################################## o r g a n i z a t i o n s ################################################################## Date: Sat, 2 Mar 91 15:50 EST From: Ginni Dubois Hello!
