Dear Martin Lee, You may not remember me ... I introduced myself and our electronic activists mailing list when you spoke on a panel (Media, Gulf War) here at Dartmouth around March (?). I gave you a file describing the "Progressive Alliance ClearingHouse (PACH)" ACTIV-L has close to 1,000 members now, and will shortly also be a UseNet newsgroup. ACTIV-L, the Activists Mailing List, was given a complimentary PeaceNet account (in my name, "harelb") when Howard Frederick was forwarded a copy of this PACH file (and "part 1"); my preferred email address is simply "harel@dartmouth.edu" Any day now, our new Usenet newsgroup ("conference") will be started. [The naming-vote came up with "misc.activism.progressive," I belive] The UseNet is the system of newsgroups for the Internet, accessible by students from universities across the countries plus member companies. It reaches many tens of thousands of people (not sure exactly). One of the files I am sending you following this letter describes our archiver feature. You can send the archiver a command to get the files NEWSGRP PROPOSAL which describes this new newsgroup. Many important files have been added since to the archiver; the entire AI 1990 catalog is online, as is the entire AFSC Peace Education Resource Catalog, Dave Barsamian's audiotape catalog, and the South End Press catalog is being scanned in. You will note a "media" section composed primarily of excellent FAIR reports (plus from Project Censored). Enclosed separately: (1) Info. on "prog-pubs," an electronic mailing lists of PSNs (Progressive Student Newspapers) started by an ACTIV-Ler. There is also a file listing contact persons (US address and email) for PSNs on Prog-pubs. The New Liberation News Service is on the list, but I would like to work more closely with NLNS. In fact, NLNS (the the Institute for Social and Cultural Change as a whole) and FAIR are perhaps the most important two groups for the goals outlined in the PACH file. I'm enclosing the diagram and "goals" chart as a reminder, but you can get another copy of the PACH file by sending the 1-line message: GET PROJECT PACH-2 ACTIV-L to: LISTSERV@UMCVMB.BITNET - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (2) A friend (met through email) at Princeton, Frank Bertoldi, is doing some excellent work with a group called the Princeton Information Project (PIP). Quite exciting is their use of electronic media so that their only cost is printing. They also do a fine job with graphics, etc (unfair comparison with the average PSN, since they are a join university/community project, w/grad. students (Frank is a post-doc in astrophysics) and hence have more time and expertise, but they would be a big help to prog-pubs and NLNS members) I'd like to forward you a copy of PIP's _Information Gulf_, their publication, if you give me the address to forward it to, so you can see for yourself. Frank's address is bertoldi@astro.princeton.edu He also has an account on PeaceNet. (3) David S. Cohen (davids@u2.dartmouth.edu) and others are trying to start up a new progressive/radical paper here at Dartmouth ("stet" died shortly after my undergraduate days here). As you may know, the Dartmouth Review is extremely well funded and gets delivered to every student and department (plus bookstore, etc) every week, on fancy paper, with colors, etc, and with one more feature: lots and lots of BS; that's a generous assessment; "hate" would better describe their character assassinations, and xenophobia ("pro-Western"), racism, sexism, homophobia, etc, etc. They helped drive out (black) professor Bill Cole, one of the best professors I had as an undergraduate. Any assistance you could provide them, monetary or not, and perhaps working together with us at ACTIV-L, NLNS, PIP, and others ACTIV-L has networked with, would be greatly appreciated. (4) Notwithstanding (2) and (3), mainly I am interested in working with you and with FAIR on the "overall" issues I had mentioned before. I'll stop here to avoid running too long, and hope for future communication and positive contact, Best regards, Harel Barzilai Enclosures: =========== (1) How to use the ACTIV-L archiver and a listing (2) PACH diagram and reference (3) About the _Information Gulf_ (by the Princeton Info.
