We are asking that the data base be for contact people representing organizations (not private indivi- duals). We are asking for only people linked to organizations, because if we list individuals as well, the listing can quickly get unmanage- ably large and expensive for us to distribute (by "organization" we mean anything from affinity groups active in their community, to non- profit org.s, etc...). We strongly suggest, though, that you encourage your local organizations to either recruit someone who knows email and has access to a computer account, or to have one of your members com- mit to learning email, and getting an account. As the data base grows, we will be periodically mailing the updated address list to members. We are taking addresses from all networks that can communicate with others. If you would like to participate in this list, please send us your address in the following form: ;;;; ;; ; ;; * i.e. student movement, labor, community organizing, networking, media watch, etc...3 subjects only please) Please place a semicolon (;) between each subject entry, and do not include the <> signs. Addresses can be sent to account romalley on Econet on the IGC network: (cdp!romalley@arisia.xerox.com from internet, cdp!romalley%labrea@stanford from Bitnet, uunet!pyramid!cdp!romalley from UUCP, and hplabs!cdp!romalley from Well) Or you can mail them to us at: "c/o Data Base Project" Suite #125 Post Office Box 1880 Santa Cruz, CA 95061 USA The format of the guide will be 1) a quick cookbook style set of instructions on using email and communicating with other networks, 2) an alfabetical listing, and 3) a subject listing. The reason we don't want more than three subject listings is to keep down the level of cross-referencing, so if you can make do with less, we would appreci- ate it. We have the capability of formatting the guide for printout on an Apple LaserWriter, a Xerox 8700 laser printer, or sending it in ASCII text mode for editing on your own. Please specify which form you would like to receive it in. We will be compiling the database on a Unix-based system. Also, as we are working with very little resources at the moment, and our editorial committee has said that any CONCISE explanations from other users about how to write to other nets from their own would be appreciated. This will facilitate writing the instructions section. Be creative in how short you can make clear instructions for novices. We will try to have a preliminary copy of the guide ready in 1-2 weeks, so send in your addresses quickly. Needless to say, the costs of a project of this nature can mount quickly, so we are asking that organizations joining the list to please send a donation to the above address if they can. All of the work on this is strictly volunteer and non- profit. NOTE: E-mail has the potential to be an important tool for networking, providing quick, inexpensive communication between communities and organizations. However due to the nature of the system (and by putting out a mass call for addresses) ANY MESSAGES SENT BY E-MAIL MUST BE CONSIDERED PUBLIC. The main purpose of this database is to begin establishing contacts between groups in the movement, and to facili- tate the rapid distribution of news, and ideas. This service is for informational purposes only. p.s. We would be especially interested in concise instructions on mailing to nets in Europe & the Middle East. Any concise instructions you would like to send would be greatly appreciated. ** End of text from cdp:mideast.actions **
