From Maine to Los Angeles students have voiced their anger and frustration with the War in the Gulf and the lack of attention to concerns here at home. Unfortunately most of this activity is ignored by the $EFpopular? press, and campuses remain isolated and unheard. At the same time much of the public anti-war organizing is orchestrated by the voices and ideas of professional peace activists. The result has been a struggle for students to link together in regional coalitions in order to coordinate activities and share information. This appears to have been quite effective in some areas, and major student conferences have been scheduled during January, but the problem of isolation remains and the flow of information is at times more frustrating than efficient. The need for a network of communication>> a dependable information source>> ha been expressed at student meetings around the country. The Campus Information Network Against War is being created to meet this need. We envision a space for a national student calender, announcements of campus activities, and a continuing dialogue involving ideas, reactions, and insights. In isolation we have campus activism, with communication we have a student movement. The structure of the Network revolves around a newsletter that will be available, for free, to student organizations. This newsletter will be formatted here at Wesleyan and then distributed, both electronically and through the postal system, to campuses across the country. Because of limited resources, we will send one newsletter to each group. We hope that every organization that receives a copy will make it widely available at their campus (obviously, each situation will demand a different means of distributing the newsletter>> at meetings, vigils, the campus center, bulletin boards, etc.) Because we encourage reproduction of the newsletter in whole or in part, anything received by the Campus Information Network Against War becomes public domain. Please call or send ideas, articles, calendar of events on campus, editorials, information from regional networks, and support of any kind. The Network depends on your interest and support. Sincerely, The Campus Information Network Against War ------------------------------------------- Information exchange and Newsletter distribution: The structure of the network revolves around a ongoing newsletter. This newsletter will be available in Macintosh Pagemaker, ASCII text, and (8.5 x 11?) paper versions. In order to receive either electronic version of the newsletter (Pagemaker or ASCII text) you must have an account on either BitNet or Internet (these are computer networks widely used by colleges and universities). We will send the newsletter directly to your account so that it can be reproduced for distribution on your campus. If you don$D9t have access to either a BitNet or Internet account, a single copy of the newsletter will be sent by mail. You are in charge of reproducing and/or distributing the newseltter at your campus (and, if possible, region). We recommend that the newsletter be received in Pagemaker format via E-Mail (for formal, organizational, and financial reasons). If this is not possible, the newsletter can be sent in a simple, relatively unformatted ASCII text file that is downloadable and printable from any computer with a modem and communications software. Important: Please call or write and tell us in what format you wish to receive the newsletter (Pagemaker, ASCII text, or mailed hard copy). Written articles and ideas can be sent to the Network either electronically or by mail. All electronic contributions should be in a simple ASCII text format (rather than Microsoft Word, for example). We appreciate all contributions and suggestions. We look forward to hearing from you. contact: jehresman@eagle.wesleyan.edu, or Mirriam Schaacht at 203/638-0288 peace...John
