[Written around Aug/Sept '90] ------------------------------------------------------------------ ...I got pretty excited today..: a Chicago area free monthly newspaper, _Heartland_, which is only the second issue I've seen... Well, these guys are both using computers, and are in contact with various organizations across the country... it's all on one page "The World" in a format like "In Short," [in In These Times] only by country: "Founder of ARENA Party implicated in murders" (of Oqueli), "Source: Midwest CISPES"; another one: "Guatemala: 2000 political deaths"; "Source: Latin America News Update" [a really cool source -I got a free issue at the LA-studies dept here] and "USA: B-2 promotions: coming soon to a TV near you"; "source: Peacenet: CDP:ALERTS" This is *exactly* the type of stuff I have been envisioning for progressive campus newspapers across the country, to get info, not readily avail., quickly, to many many people. This includes action-alerts, planned-actions, etc, aside from news. ################################################################## FYI, from the July-August '90 issue of Heartland Journal: (Two comments in [[ ]]s) " B-2 promotions: coming soon to a TV near you -------------------------------------------- Northrup is placing 30-second television spots featuring Chuck Yeager extolling the virtues of the Stealth Bomber. Chicago is one of the 16 metropolitan market that has been selected to view the ads. In the script Chuck Yeager asserts: "American pilots have always counted on technology to give us the edge. The B-2 Stealth bomber gives us that edge. It represents the very best of American technology. The B-2 can out-smart any kind of defenses anywhere in the world [[geez!]]. America should be proud of the thousands of people all across the country and here in [Chicago] who have built the B-2. The B-2 can keep America a leader in technology [[!]] well into the next century." People in Santa Barbara have prepared a response ad planned as follows: "Let's talk straight about the B-2 Stealth Bomber. The Pentagon wants 75 B-2 bombers at more than a billion dollars each. That money could go a long way towards environmental and social needs. The mission of the B-2 is to bomb the Soviet Union *after* nuclear missiles have been launched -- to stir up the rubble *after* World War 3. But the B-2 couldn't succeed. The plane avoided *modern* radar, but on the *older* Soviet radar, it show up just fine. The Peace Resource Center of Santa Barbara felt you should hear some straight talk about the B-2 bomber" --Source: Peacenet CDP:ALERTS" ################################################################## Another item: "Peace position overlooked in debate on spending. ------------------------------------------------ According to a study by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, a shift of $30 billion away from defense [a term I object to and am surprised HJ is using --HB] spending over the period 1986-1990 could have yielded 195,000 more teachers, 409,000 children in Head Start and 900,000 rehabilitated public housing units [imagine what $200 billion per year could do, if we reduced to a level even many establishment people have said is quite adequate, $100,000,000,000/year]. The Congressional Black Caucus has drafted a Quality of Life budget which reduces the 1991 defense budget authority by $52.7 billion. They would cancel teh B-2 stealth bomber, the MX an dmidgetman missle, Trident II submarine and Star Wars program. And why aren't their voices heard? One reason is that the peace movement is being excluded from the insider debate over the size and use of the "peace dividend." A recent study by Frairness & Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) found that `the media have...consistently ignored the perspective of peace movement organizations...no mention of these gropus could be found in more than 35 articles appearing in [major national newspapers], Time, and Newsweek, or in TV, or in TV news segments on ABC's Nighline, NBC's Today Show and PBS's MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour, between November 1989 and January 1990' --Source: Synapses" [Has anyone heard of "Synapses"??] <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ################################################################## # Copyright (C) 1990, Harel Barzilai for Activists Mailing-list # # You may copy freely so long as you do not charge # # others for it, and include this copyright notice # ################################################################## harelb@zaphod.UChicago.EDU <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
