From harelb Thu Apr 25 23:52:09 1991 Date: Wed, 24 Apr 91 23:52:03 -0400 From: harelb (Harel Barzilai) To: mathrich@umcvmb.bitnet, gst@gnosys.svle.ma.us, harelb, arens@venera.isi.edu, cdp!christic@labrea.stanford.edu, PEPINSKY@IUBACS.bitnet, lamperti@dartmouth.edu Subject: something interesting I just found out... [Emailed to MODERATORS-L...] Seems like this could be useful for our new group & in general: [I write:] (2) I saw Peter email to news-announce-newgroups@uunet.uu.net (or somesuch) -- can this be used to post, using just email, to some groups? (it failed for alt-activism@...); we don't have GNUs here yet and I'll love to be able to post from emacs [David Lawrence, moderator of news.announce.newgroups:] It is only for moderated groups, and all mailpaths sites handle only the moderated groups that way. Posted mail in other groups can be done by mailing to news-group-name@ucbvax.berkeley.edu or news.group.name@cis.ohio-stated.edu or news.group.name@rpi.edu. Crossposting does not work with any of these, though I believe if you send an article with an appropriate Newsgroups: header to post-usenet@ucbvax.berkeley.edu that will work. Dave (setq mail '("tale@rpi.edu" "uupsi!rpi!tale" "tale@rpitsmts.bitnet")) ****************************************************************** My next mission (-: Find out from Dave L or maybe Gene Spafford: how to set up automatic posting of articles to our newsgroup. This is actually very important to me: one of the main items I'll list under my "things to do" for the new newsgroup will be "progressming" (as in TV/radio stations). For example, once every week, an entry from the resource file "PUBLCATN RESOURCE" would be posted, featuring _Z_ magazine one week, CISPES' _Alert_ another, etc; each weekly post would say "for a complete listing of the publications resource file, just..." Similarly for videos, speakers, groups, etc. This is somewhat complex but reasonably mechanical a process so there is hope of automating it. Similarly for the 50 or so "best of ACTIV-L" files now listed under the archived file ACTIV-L ARCHIVE [Gary, I'm not sure how much you've been following this end; send the 1-line message GET ACTIV-L ARCHIVE ACTIV-L to: LISTSERV@UMCVMB.BITNET for such a listing] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Note that the email format makes life much easier in several instances: any mailing list, for example the Science for Nicaragua / Segovia Sentinel / etc., will just add that name to their list and similarly LAtin America Data Base, if it's easy for them to email their stuff, can just add the name. Infact, we can add the name of the group to the listing of email addresses subscribed to ACTIV-L-1 which would carry stuff that goes to the Newsgroup while ACTIV-L-2 would be for dicussion, unmoderated, etc. [One problem might exist (shouldn't be too difficult to fix) is that since we'll be moderated we'll have to use the uunet.uu.net convention which would be emailed to us poor "moderators" instead of posted; but that 2nd setup Dave mentions is something that exists that I'm sure we'll be able to take advantage of, or should certainly try...] I just emailed to the 750 or so yes voters and ACTIV-L about the rename vote, and you should have gotten (at least one) copy... I'm email soon to a group of people properly containing this one regarding fuller discussions about group setup. Peace Harel
