Have you still not received it from the list?? Rich -------------------------- Original note follows --------------------------- Fwd from Harel Barzilai: ************************************************ *** ---> ACTIV-L SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT <--- *** ************************************************ AML --> ACTIV-L --> misc.peace Dear ACTIV-Lers, =============== We hope to soon create a new moderated newsgroup, misc.peace or misc.pach, on the UseNet. This newsgroup will be an expanded version of ACTIV-L, with numerous network connections to progressive organizations like Witness for Peace, Christic Institute, CISPES, Human Rights Watch, Greenpeace and Common Cause, and progressive news publications like New Liberation News Service, The Nation, Proceso, LADB and El Rescate. We Need Your Help! ================== Usenet guidelines specify a procedure for starting a new newsgroup, consisting of a formal "call for discussion" on the usenet to iron out specifics, followed by a voting period during which votes are cast by email to a designated network address. To create misc.peace, we need at least 100 more "yes" votes than "no" votes, and at least 2/3 of the votes cast must be "yes" votes. A copy of the _Call For a New Newsgroup_ will be posted here on ACTIV-L separately -- be on the watch for it (if you miss it, I [harel@dartmouth.edu] and Rich Winkel have copies) Even more importantly, we need help "co-moderating" the group, which will serve as a source of news, information, and resources for activists everywhere. To deal with the volume this will entail, it would be nice to be able to split up the informational posts by topic, with people "co-moderating" things they are interested in and read anyway, hence requiring minimal additional time on their part, avoiding a situation in which one person or a few has to sort through everything. Here's a partial list of "co-moderators;" please let Rich know if you are interested in moderating. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Rich Winkel Administration; media, foreign policy MATHRICH@UMCVMB.BITNET Harel Barzilai Resource Files; PACH [Progressive Alliance Clearing house] project, incl. linking with Network of Alternative Student Press / New Liberation News Service Andy Lang harel@dartmouth.edu Andy Lang Christic Institute issues (covert operations, "secret government", Christian perspectives on progressive issues) John Lamperti "maybe" co-moderator for Cent. America, or part of lamperti@dartmouth.edu [Away in Costa Rica and Nica until late March] Hal Pepinsky "The political culture of violence and peace" [incl. prison reform, death penalty, if I understood correctly, Hal?] pepinsky@ucs.indiana.edu Would people involved with or having contacts with Witness for Peace (WFP), Science for Nicaragua, Jewish Committee on the Middle East (JCOME), New Liberation News Service (NLNS or NASP), Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR), (insert your group here),.. be interested in being officially (or not) responsible for posting and forwarding on issues relating to your group/topic, or being email contact for more info, or to post comments/questions on the topic? Other important things which take time and thus must be divided up which I think would be useful include: --> Person to post Calendar of Events from Nation, In These Times, etc (perhaps 1 person/paper). --> Eventually, contact person with papers such as these, as we develop a working relationship to publish some of their articles. --> Person to forward things to alt.activism, say, a monthly reminder about misc.peace, what we do, who we are, what archive files are avail., etc, until/unless we get some automatic periodic poster installed. --> Person to whom *upcoming* (different category post from reporting on *past*) local/regional actions/events notices should be emailed. --> Person to be email contact for new/prospective members, for general questions about who to contact for their question, more about ACTIV-L, how to get info on LISTSERVER/ARCHIVER, etc basic info, so people like the administrative moderator (Rich Winkel) aren't inundated with such questions. --> Other ideas anyone? Email Rich and myself over the next 4-5 days.. Finally, what do people think of the name "misc.peace?" We hope our group will split off into several subgroups, by topic, e.g. misc.peace.central-amer, misc.peace.covert, misc.peace.environment? Does the latter sound contrived? Should we start with misc.pach, for Progressive Alliance Clearing House? In any case the names aren't all *that* important, I think, and they will in any case be long if/when we split our group into "conferences," but we'll just have to respond to ReadNews/RN's usual [ynq] anyway.
