To introduce myself, I'm a member of a local fledgling group of peace activists: Aquidneck Islanders For Peace. The group formed just two weeks before the war broke, and we're made up of people of many different ages and backgrounds in the community: military wives, Vietnam veterans, religious leaders, grandparents, students, liberals, and conservatives. None of us has much experience in speaking out against government policy, and we've had to shift objectives from pro-peace to anti-war. We want to do something as a group, but we're confused. We decided to begin by educating ourselves and our community on how to protest effectively and how to sort out the complicated details of a U.S. foreign policy run amok. I'm searching for information about the fundamentals of non-violent protest and civil disobedience, examples of successful grass roots organizations, examples of how to hold a teach-in, how to line up speakers to broaden the knowledge and awareness of the community, and how to run such an organization on shoe-string budget. Would you send me a copy of your Peacenet brochure? Thank you. --- Mark Mersereau Home: msm@telos.Newport.RI.US Phone: 401-847-5692
