FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Dick Bennett JANUARY 23, 1992 (603) 624-4081 BUSH REBOUNDS IN REPUBLICAN RACE, DEMOCRATIC DEBATE HAD LITTLE IMPACT ON PREFERENCE, AND AGRAN APPEARS IN DEMOCRATIC RACE ACCORDING TO THE LATEST NEW HAMPSHIRE POLL Manchester, NH - George Bush regained a comfortable lead over Patrick Buchanan following Bush's campaign visit to New Hampshire last week according to the latest New Hampshire Poll among likely Republican primary voters. In the telephone tracking survey conducted January 20 through 22, 1992 among a random sample of 442 likely Republican primary voters in New Hampshire, Bush leads Buchanan 60% to 19%, with 21% of likely Republican primary voters undecided. While Bush has rebounded among likely Republican primary voters in New Hampshire, the survey results indicate a continuing weakness among those saying they will vote for Bush. Overall, 38% of likely Republican primary voters say they would consider voting for Patrick Buchanan as a way to protest George Bush's handling of the economy, 53% say they would not consider voting for Buchanan as a way to protest, and 9% are undecided. A total of 25% of those saying they would vote for Bush, representing 15% overall, say they would consider voting for Buchanan as a way to protest Bush's handling of the economy. If all of this group were to switch to Buchanan as a protest vote, Bush's base of support would drop from 60% to 45%. The surge in support for Bill Clinton has stopped in the Democratic preference while Paul Tsongas has begun to gain back support he had lost over the last few weeks. According to the tracking survey of 450 likely Democratic primary voters conducted January 20 through 22, Bill Clinton leads with 34%. Clinton is followed by Paul Tsongas at 22%, Bob Kerrey at 13%, Tom Harkin at 2%, Larry Agran at 2%, Jerry Brown at 2%, with 25% undecided. Larry Agran's showing is the first time that any of the so-called "minor" candidates has performed better than one of the 5 "major" candidates. A total of 41% of likely Democratic primary voters say that they, or members of their households, watched a part of the Democratic candidates' debate on Channel 9 last Sunday. The debate did not have any impact on the Democratic preference among those watching it, while Paul Tsongas was the big winner among those not watching the debate. ---End--- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Sample: 450 likely Democratic primary voters Interview dates: January 20-22, 1992 Theoretical Margin of Error: Plus or minus 4.61%, 95% of the time Question wording and results: If the Democratic Presidential Preference Primary election were being held between Larry Agran, Jerry Brown, Bill Clinton, Tom Harkin, Bob Kerrey, and Paul Tsongas, for whom would you vote - Agran, Brown, Clinton, Harkin, Kerrey, or Tsongas?
